If I Own Multiple Homes, Can I Put Them All Under the Same Policy?

May 5, 2022 by James Little

Owning a home in the United States is an achievement and a primary pillar of the “American Dream.” For this reason, the need to own a house is increasing every day.

As people buy houses, the need to protect them comes knocking at the door. Owning a home is one thing; the other is protecting that house from theft, repairs, and damage. Fortunately, insurance companies are here to help. The only question is how vastly does one insurance policy cover?

Home Insurance Policy

The concept of home insurance is simple. You purchase it, and you are offered financial protection during situations related to your residential building. With homeowners insurance, your residential building and the items kept in that building are covered.

Without home insurance, you are left with the burden of covering expensive repair costs and other issues with your residential buildings.

Whether you own just one property or are lucky enough to have more than one, getting home insurance is important. But the question remains, can you place multiple homes under one policy?

You have a home with your family in Brooklyn, a beach house somewhere around Long Island, and maybe a small house in Ithaca. Can you put all three homes under one insurance?

One Insurance, Two Houses; How Possible?

It is possible to use one insurance policy on more than one house. Before you fist the air, know that this comes with restrictions. If the houses are available for rent only, you qualify for multi-property insurance. If you own multiple houses that aren’t available for rent, you cannot place all of them under one insurance policy. You can only place one under one policy. Why is this?

Earlier, we used an example of a person with three houses in three different locations. The beach house at Long Island is more prone to disasters like flooding and hurricanes, and it is also more prone to being robbed because it is vacant. On the other hand, the property at Brooklyn is more occupied and, as such, more prone to damages that require repairs. For this reason, one insurance package would not be able to cover all of these issues. This means that each house requires its insurance policy.

One insurance policy, called multi-property insurance, can cover more than one home for rental homes.

Multi-Property Insurance

Multi-property insurance is an insurance policy that protects all of your RENTAL buildings against risks like flood, fire, and theft. In sharp contrast to home insurance, multi-property insurance can cover all of your properties under one insurance policy.

Today, insurance is the best way of protecting your house. If you can get insurance for valuables like that classic car in your garage and even the baseball cards you never use, then ensure you add your house to the plan. All of them, whether you are going for homeowners insurance or multi-property insurance. Remember to go for the best when making decisions.
